The mosque's name goes back to Shaykh Shaʿbān Abū al-Qurūn an 'upright friend of God' who died in 1976 and is buried nearby. Later both the zāwīya and the masjid were renovated using stones of older building. The original building was finally demolished in the 1960s and built anew. (Mubayyiḍ, 1995, pp. 135.
